CHICAGO – The Institute of Food Technologists (IFT) today announced that Nancy Ukpe Gargula has joined the association as the Director of Diversity and Inclusion. The role will collaborate across the association to provide various solutions, consultations, and trainings on D&I opportunities and issues.

With the recent addition of a strategic promise to “Include,” the Director of Diversity & Inclusion will be responsible for fulfilling this promise by defining, developing, and measuring strategies that enable IFT's mission to further diversity and inclusion.

"IFT believes that diversity and inclusion are essential to the success and sustainability of the association, and our goal is to create an environment where values of diversity, inclusion, and equity are celebrated and made real for our members, staff, and volunteers," said IFT CEO Christie Tarantino-Dean. "We're thrilled to welcome Nancy to IFT, who has a wealth of experience, and we look forward to the impact she will make here."

For the past ten years, Ukpe Gargula worked for the YMCA of the USA, most recently as their Manager of Culture & Engagement. In that role, Ukpe Gargula designed, implemented and managed the diversity and inclusion curriculum, leading to staff awareness and prevention on implicit bias in the workplace. In addition, she contributed to the design, facilitation, and analysis of the Y’s national leadership development training program, which has an annual participation rate of more than 1,100 staff from 17 cities across the country. She also supported the Y Global Change Agents leadership program, creating a greater understanding of diversity, inclusion, and global strategies.

"Diversity at IFT is particularly important as the organization works to create a dynamic forum where individuals from more than 90 countries can collaborate, learn, and grow, transforming scientific knowledge into innovative solutions for the benefit of people around the world," said Ukpe Gargula. "I'm excited to join the team and leverage my skills to further cultivate a diverse and inclusive atmosphere."

Ukpe Gargula holds a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Hartwick College and Master of Arts in Counseling Psychology and Substance Abuse from Adler University.
