AI Endeavors for ADM and Brightseed

Although scientific research highlights the central role the microbiome plays in human health, details remain to be discovered about the specific functions of the diverse microbial communities and diet-microbiome-host interactions. As a result, there is a surge of interest in nutrition science communities on the role of synbiotics for precision gut health benefits, a category of gut health solutions in the form of food and supplements that combine probiotics with prebiotics.

Recently, ADM and Brightseed announced a global joint partnership to develop evidence-based functional synbiotic products that target microbiome optimization. ADM is leveraging Brightseed’s artificial intelligence (AI) platform, Forager, to decipher the molecular interactions between dietary plants and gut microbes, and their potential impact on human health. Forager AI discovers bioactives in plants and maps them to specific modes of action at a rate and accuracy that was previously impossible, providing insights into biological changes that can occur at the cellular level. ADM and Brightseed aim to launch highly efficacious synbiotics in specific health areas as functional ingredients for foods and beverages, dietary supplements, and medical foods by 2025.

Probiotic Versus Staph

Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus), commonly known as “staph,” is a pathogen that caused over 119,000 infections and nearly 20,000 deaths in the United States in 2017. However, the use of oral antibiotics for staph decolonization is advised against because of its effect on the gut microbiota and antibiotic resistance.

A clinical trial demonstrated that Kerry Group’s probiotic strain Sporevia (Bacillus subtilis MB40) (250 mg for 30 days) reduced Staphylococcus aureus in the human body by more than 95%.

Sporevia (Bacillus subtilis MB40) is a probiotic strain owned by Kerry Group following a licensing agreement with BIO-CAT Microbials in June 2021. The trial with 115 adults from Thailand was conducted following the discovery that Sporevia secretes fengycin, which has been shown to inhibit S. aureus colonization. Oral supplementation with Sporevia resulted in a 96.8% reduction of S. aureus in the stool and a 65.4% reduction of S. aureus in the nose. According to the researchers, the findings indicated potential for Bacillus subtilis to be used to lower infection rates in vulnerable individuals, and in long-term care facilities such as nursing homes.
