General Foods established World Food Prize
I have just received my copy of the August Food Technology. As usual, I read it cover to cover and was very pleased to see the announcement of the 2009 World Food Prize Laureate, Dr. Ejeta of Purdue University. However, I must correct an error in the report that identifies Dr. Norman Borlaug (a dear friend of mine, who recently passed away) as the one who “established The World Food Prize in 1986.” This is not correct. Although the idea of an Agriculture Prize was Norman’s, the Food Prize was established by General Foods Corporation under my leadership. This was a grand and great pro bono move by a great food company and should never be forgotten.

I wrote an oral history on the Prize from its conception through its move to Iowa. This is a fantastic story of good works, near death, then survival and rescue by the great citizens of Iowa.
