Microwave Popcorn Uses Canola Oil
Weaver Popcorn Co.
, Noblesville, Ind., has unveiled the first microwave popcorn to be made with canola oil in the U.S. The new and improved formulation is lower in calories, total fat, saturated fat, and sodium, while also providing omega-3, omega-6, and omega-9 fatty acids. “Since popcorn is all we make, we’re continually striving to make our product the best-tasting, healthiest popcorn, at the best possible price,” said Mike Weaver, CEO. All three flavors in the Pop Weaver microwave popcorn line—Light Butter, Butter, and Extra Butter—have been reformulated to incorporate canola oil. Both Light Butter and Butter carry the American Heart Association’s Heart Check mark, designating them as heart-healthy products. The Light Butter and Butter flavors contain 210 calories and 230 calories per full popped bag, respectively. The Extra Butter microwave popcorn contains 260 calories and 2g saturated fat. All three flavors contain zero grams of trans fat.

Pizza Goes Vegan
Turtle Island Foods,
Hood River, Ore., has rolled out a line of vegan pizzas under its Tofurky brand. Made with Tofurky’s meat alternatives and Daiya tapioca-based cheese that melts like traditional cheese, the frozen products come in three varieties: Vegan Cheese; Italian Sausage & Fire-Roasted Veggies; and Pepperoni. The last variety represents the first meatless frozen pepperoni pizza on the U.S. market (pepperoni is the No. 1 pizza topping in the U.S., accounting for 36% of all pizzas ordered). In addition, Tofurky’s Pepperoni Pizza contains half the sodium, 0mg of cholesterol, 6g of fat, and 1g of saturated fat per serving compared to 15mg of cholesterol, 15g of fat, and 5g of saturated fat in a typical meat pepperoni pizza. Tofurky pizzas are being distributed through select natural food and grocery stores and will be available across the U.S. in September. The products carry a suggested retail price of $7.99.

Mac & Cheese for Adults
