West African–inspired seasoning

POKS Spices launched a new Jollof Rice West African Seasoning. The product is sold in collaboration with Burlap and Barrel, a public corporation that partners with small farmers to sell single-origin spices. The new seasoning draws inspiration from across West Africa, including Nigeria, Cameroon, Ghana, Gambia, and Senegal.

“The West African region is often left off conversations in the culinary world, but West African foods boast bold and colorful flavors that have directly impacted cuisines in the Caribbean and Southern United States,” said POKS Spices founder Abena Foli in a press release.

Inspired by the traditional one-pot rice dish, this seasoning contains sweet paprika, tomato powder, bay leaves, thyme, chili pepper, ginger, and garlic. The seasoning has flavor notes of tomato, spicy herbs, and toasty warmth, and is salt-free while still providing bold flavors.

POKS Spices’ Jollof Rice West African Seasoning can be purchased on Burlap and Barrel’s website.

Quick and healthy bowls

Yumbini recently rolled out quick bean and rice bowls to provide a filling and nutritious meal that’s ready in minutes. The bowls are available in three varieties: Smoky Chipotle Black Beans and Rice, Curried Turmeric Lentils and Rice, and Cowboy BBQ Pinto Beans and Rice.

These shelf-stable bowls contain 13 to 15 grams of protein, less than 1 gram of saturated fat, and 7 to 9 grams of dietary fiber per serving and are formulated with no sugar, preservatives, or artificial ingredients added.

Yumbini founder Jan Matsuno cited the lack of healthy, instant meals as the inspiration for starting her own product line. “I was alarmed by what I saw at the grocery store,” Matsuno said in a blog post. “Aisle after aisle of salty snacks and sugary beverages, and hundreds of products that suggest they are ‘good for you’ when they really aren’t. That’s where Yumbini started.”

Yumbini instant bean and rice bowls can be purchased through the Yumbini website and at select retailers in the Bay Area of California.

New vegan soup flavors

Upton’s Naturals introduced three new varieties to its collection of flavorful vegan soups: Chick & Wild Rice, Crimson Lentil, and Minestrone. These new soups can be heated via stovetop or microwave.

“From our Chick & Wild Rice that’s rich in protein-packed seitan to our veggie-forward Minestrone, and my personal favorite, Crimson Lentil, each of our new soups are crafted with real, simple ingredients to provide nutrition and excellent taste for consumers following a plant-based or vegan diet,” said Upton’s Naturals founder Dan Staackmann in a press release.

Each flavor contains 8 to 11 grams of plant-based protein per serving and 180 to 300 calories per bowl. Upton’s Naturals soups are certified as plant based and contain no added colors, flavors, or preservatives as well as no GMOs, cholesterol, or trans fats.

Upton’s Naturals soups are available in 14 oz cans at over 5,000 stores in the United States and in 15 countries worldwide.
