IFT Division Hackathons offer students the opportunity to solve real-world challenges and connect with students from across the globe.

Sustainable Food Systems Division and Fruit & Vegetable Products Division Hackathon

September 25 - October 2, 2024

Fresh produce at a marketCan you tackle one of food science’s costliest and most environmentally impactful problems? Join our exciting competition where teams of food science students will collaborate to develop innovative solutions to combat food waste. By participating, you will contribute to a more sustainable future while competing for amazing cash prizes. Showcase your skills, knowledge creativity, and passion for making a difference.

Students are not required to have any prior knowledge about food waste. Students will have one week to develop and present their ideas.

As typical hackathons are open source for majority benefit, all concepts and solutions from this competition will be considered open source and may be developed by anyone who sees the end results.

Carbohydrate Division Student Hackathon 2024 – "Hacking Fiber”

February 20-28, 2024

Assortment of breadsJoin the Carbohydrate Division for a student hackathon on “hacking fiber” in baked foods. Students will be given a period of 9 days to plan and come up with their idea to create baked goods rich in dietary fiber. Participants will be randomly assigned to teams, who will work together virtually. Teams will present their fiber rich strategy and have Q&A with judges. This event is a great way to inspire innovation and to work and network with like-minded individuals from around the world, as well as engage with the IFT Carbohydrate Division. Registration Closed


International Division Hackathon – Food for Relief

Participants will work with randomized virtual teams and will have 2 hours to design their concept and present their solutions. Participants will also get to hear from subject matter experts in the field of food security. Registration Closed


Nonthermal Processing Division Hackathon - Think Tank

May 9-23, 2024

Mango treeJoin the Institute of Food Technologists and the National Mango Board for an interactive challenge for student members. Teams will work together to solve a real-life food production problem using nonthermal processing technologies, pitching their ideas to a panel of experts in a Shark Tank style competition.
